Global Transport Optimization for Fresenius Medical Care in Canada

Fresenius Medical Care GmbH is a German global corporation specialized in the production of haemodialysis medical devices with production plants in Germany, Turkey, Italy and USA. During this project I was responsible for the optimization of the global transportation network (in cooperations with German HQ) for the Canadian operations based in Toronto, Canada.

Challenges:

  • Growing demand of medical devices and consumables from hospitals as well as home patients in Canada, leading to an increase in inbound traffic from international locations (where production took place;

  • An intricate management system as a result of an outdated tracking system which led to hidden areas of under-performance;

  • Freight spend disaggregation: deep analysis of freight spend and recommendations based on findings and strategic freight partnerships.

Opportunities:

  • An opportunity to review all existing routes both nationally and internationally for the movement of products across the world for the Canadian market;

  • A supportive senior management team in tune with continus improvement opportunies to facilitate the transition to a 'better' operational solution.

Outcomes:

  • Reduction of transportation costs on an annual basis by CAD$ 500,000;

  • Maintained the network performance with reference to lead-times to both hospitals and patients across the country;

  • Flowcharted the existing and revamped transportation network.
